About My Organic Gardening Blog

I started an organic garden and outdoor classroom last spring at my son's elementary school, Glen Arden Elementary, in Asheville, NC. The main focus is to teach children the importance of sustainability and our connection with the ecosystem, while incorporating this important message into the classroom and the already existing curriculum. The blog is just a place for updates about what is happening in the garden, a list of our sponsors, fun facts, ideas for child and family friendly gardening, votes on what people would like to see new in the garden, and a place for people to share ideas, stories, and recipes.

Why I Started Blogging

This has been a really great experience and we are growing bigger and better every day! We have gone from only 7 classes being involved to 14 classes, and over 280 students participating in hands on work and learning in the outdoor classroom. We discuss everything from growing food, composting, worm composting, soil properties, seed saving, nutrition, hunger, garden pests, birds, native plants, respect, kindness, humility, math, music, art, to poetry and social studies!

Advice

  • So far the posts are updates, but we are going to include specific quotes and memories soon. I think the most important thing is that the kids are in love with it!!!

What a great story! Thanks for sharing, and congrats on getting kids involved in gardening!
