A sweet, crisp ear of sweet corn is one of the true pleasures of summer. And it's even better when you've grown the corn yourself! So it's disappointing when you harvest corn that isn't quite ready yet. Here's how to tell if your corn is ready to harvest.
First, look at the silks at the tip of the corn cob. If they are brown, the corn is ready to harvest.
You can also check the kernels to see if the corn is ready to harvest. Pull back the husks, and look at the kernels. Are they plump and firm, or kind of flat and skinny? Plump, firm kernels are a sure sign that the corn is ready to harvest.
To harvest, you can simply pull the corn cob gently off of the plant, or use pruners to cut it off, taking a bit of stem with the husk -- this makes it easier if you are going to cook your corn in the husks.
