If slugs are making Swiss cheese of your hostas or lettuces, here's a simple tip for getting rid of them. All you need to do is cut a grapefruit in half, remove the flesh, and bring the rind out into the garden. Place the rind, curved side up, on the ground wherever you've noticed slug damage, and leave it out overnight. The next morning, take a peek under the rind. Chances are good that a slug or two will have made their way underneath in search of a cool, damp place to rest. Throw the little pests in a bucket of soapy water to kill them (or feed them to your pet toad, if you have one) and you're on your way to a slug-free garden. Repeat the whole process every couple of nights until you stop seeing slug damage.
