Compost

By Colleen Vanderlinden, About.com

Definition: Compost is the end product of the decomposition of organic matter. It is a dark brown to black, crumbly substance that adds both nutrients and beneficial microbes to the soil. Adding compost to soil improves the overall soil structure, water retention, and nutrient level.
Examples: Compost can be made in a bin, but sheet composting is another popular method.
