Basil is one of the easiest, most versatile herbs to grow in your garden. It grows well in containers, can take a bit of shade, and (if you let it bloom late in the season) will attract pollinators like mad.
I grow several varieties of basil in my garden: 'Genovese' basil for pesto and sauces, 'Spicy Globe' basil, which grows in nice, compact little plants and packs a definite flavor punch; and 'Red Rubin,' which has a nice mild flavor and adds a bit of purplish-red to the herb garden. I've also grown both 'Lime' and 'Lemon' basil, which are both quite good. 'Thai' basil has an interesting, anise-type flavor that I'm not especially fond of, but I know other gardeners who adore it. About Herb Gardens Guide Amy Jeanroy has a great article about growing and using basil that is definitely worth a look.

Yeah, agree. Basil is one of the most easy to grow herbs in the garden. Thanks for sharing by the way.
A coworker and I were just discussing basil – I’d heard from a gardener in Georgia that it did better with a good amount of shade — but my coworker says it should get as much sun as it can. Does it depend on the TYPE of basil?
