Organic Gardening Quick Tip: Use Aquarium Water as a Free Fertilizer

If you're lucky enough to have an aquarium or fish bowl, you have a free source of organic fertilizer. Aquarium water is full of nutrients: leftover bits of fish food as well as the waste produced by the fish enrich the water and make it a great, gentle fertilizer. You can use the water from your aquarium on houseplants, or out in the garden---it's especially good for container-grown plants. It provides a gentle shot of nutrients, and, since you probably change your aquarium water every couple of weeks (every couple of days for a fish bowl) you'll have a steady supply of it.

To really get the good stuff, consider using a gravel vac to get all of the "sludge" that settles into the gravel. That sludge is golden as far as the nutrients it contains. The water will have a fishy odor, of course, but it dissipates within an hour or so, and you are left with nothing but healthy, happy plants.
