What's Your Favorite Vegetable?

Thursday May 29, 2008
My vegetable garden is in full swing. Greens, beets, and lettuces are all growing strongly, and this past weekend I was finally able to plant out the tomato transplants and sow seed for cucumbers and beans. All of this planting has me wondering: which vegetable crops are you most interested in growing? Let's leave tomatoes out of the equation, because everyone wants to grow tomatoes, it seems. So, other than tomatoes, what is your favorite vegetable to grow in the garden? If you don't have a garden yet, which vegetable will you be sure to grow once you have one?

As with our weeds poll last week, the answers I get to this poll will help me understand what information will be most useful to our community. Thanks in advance for voting--and if your favorite veggie isn't on the list, or if you just want to talk veggie gardens, please tell us about it in the forums!

My two favourite veggies weren’t listed: carrots and broccoli.

Paul–Ha…now it’s easy to see my own biases–I could happily do without carrots and broccoli, and as a result they didn’t even make the poll. I’ll try to be more equal opportunity in the future :-) Thank you for commenting!

Asparagus is pretty high on my list. Very tasty. mmmmm

This is a hard one — I can’t imagine a garden without a combination of essentials: lettuce, green beans (I prefer growing bush varieties), carrots, corn, potatoes, crookneck (or other yellow) summer squash, and zucchini. Since I can’t hardly stand what passes for lettuce at the grocery store, I put that down as first choice.

John—
Asparagus is delectable–and it’s so hard to find fresh, good-quality asparagus without paying an arm and a leg. I’m with you on that one!

Thanks for voting/commenting!

Beth–

I had to laugh–you sound just like me! I have so many “must-have” veggies that I’m running out of garden space :-)

I’m trying to grow artichokes for the first time this year! Yum… If anyone has any hints, they’d be more than welcome!

You also left out tomatoes.

Kallie–Ooh, I want to grow artichokes, too! Let me know how it goes!

Randall–I left tomatoes out on purpose–they’re the most popular vegetable among home gardeners, so I already have articles planned about growing them. I wanted to know what was popular among the rest of the veggies :-)

I love growing things, but I’m not crazy about veggies. That’s why I stick to flowers.

Now..if I coudl somehow grow cheseburgers and pepperoni pizza…that would be different! :-)

Friar—I’d be all over a pizza plant myself :-) Love your viking artwork at 6weeks.ca, by the way!
