Reader Tips: Kill Weeds in Sidewalk Cracks

Tuesday May 6, 2008

This week's Organic Gardening Reader Tip comes from Kathryn, who blogs at Plant Whatever Brings You Joy. From Kathryn:

Here is a recipe for a weed killer that will kill those annoying weeds that thrive in your sidewalk cracks! This is a full spectrum weed killer, so be careful not to spray this on any plant or lawn area you actually care about, as it will also die. By using this recipe you will not be contributing to the poisons that wash into your local water runoff that find their way into your local streams, rivers or oceans.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 t. liquid detergent
  • 1 gallon vinegar

Directions:

Moderately heat one gallon of white vinegar. Add one cup of regular table salt and stir until the salt dissolves. Cool the mixture. When cool, add 1 teaspoon of liquid detergent. Pour mixture into a plastic spray bottle and spray directly on weeds. As with any weed killer, use when there is little chance of impending rain. Note the added benefit that there is no danger to your children or pets, though you should store mixture away from their curious hands and paws! For maximum effectiveness, rinse out the sprayer on your bottle periodically.

Thanks so much, Kathryn! Reader tips are a weekly feature here at About Organic Gardening. If you have a tip, please email me at organicgardening.guide@about.com.

colleen - any idea how long this mixture lasts? I have some that I made last year and I was wondering if it would still be good or if I should dispose of it and make a new batch.
